Plot to attack Federal Reserve in NYC alleged

The FBI and NYPD arrest a suspected terrorist involved in an apparent plot to attack the Federal Reserve of New York, reports WNBC's Jonathan Dienst.

NEW YORK - Federal authorities have arrested a man they say was plotting to attack the Federal Reserve Bank in New York City.

Authorities said the suspect, Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, 21, drove a van he believed to be loaded with a 1,000-pound bomb from Long Island to lower Manhattan and placed the van near the Federal Reserve Bank. He then allegedly tried to detonate explosives with a cellphone. He was arrested by the FBI and New York police.?

The defendant faces charges of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to al-Qaida, officials said.

Law enforcement officials stressed that the plot was a sting operation monitored by the FBI and NYPD and the public was never at risk.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York is the largest of the 12 regional banks in the Federal Reserve system. Visitors are subject to security screening before entering the bank, and no one is allowed to take photos or video inside the building, which is located in Manhattan's financial district.
