This article is written by Erec Smith, professor of English and director of Ursinus College?s Center for Writing. He is a co-editor and contributor to the forthcoming book, The Making of Barack Obama: The Politics of Persuasion. His recent essay, ?Making Room for Fat Studies in Writing Center Theory and Practice,? can be read in the journal Praxis: A Writing Center Journal. His interests lie in writing pedagogy and rhetorics of diversity.
?
In the Fall of 2012, Ursinus Magazine took on the very timely topic of childhood obesity. The magazine?s cover story, ?Keep Moving: Ursinus Alumni and Faculty Work to Bring Attention to Childhood Obesity? presented the noble goal of creating healthier lifestyles for America?s youth.? Correlating children?s appearances with their probable lifestyles, the article equated size with health. However, it did not take into consideration movements that counter the more moralistic and aesthetic implications of initiatives like Michelle Obama?s ?Let?s Move? Campaign or those movements that expose research on weight/health correlations as inconclusive, at best.? There is even an academic field, Fat Studies, which explores these issues. In this piece, I want to draw attention to the other side of the obesity epidemic to let people know that there is, indeed, another side. I hope you will explore this side for yourself and come to your own conclusions.
Fat Studies is an interdisciplinary field of scholarship dedicated to the critique of the information and common beliefs about fat and fat people. This field is growing rapidly and seems as important from an activist?s perspective as it is from a scholar?s. Organizations like the National Association for the Advancement of Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) combine scholarship and activism to support fat people in all aspects of their lives, from living healthily to dealing with an anti-fat society. Scholarly texts like the Fat Studies journal and The Fat Studies Reader are working to promote awareness and solidify the place of fat studies in academia. Books like Paul Campos? The Obesity Epidemic, Peter Stearns? Fat History, and Amy Farrell?s Fat Shame are just a few of the texts that discuss the nature and rhetoric of fat stigmatization and the connection to other modes of discrimination.
I am sure that many people involved in the ?Keep Moving? article do not condone the mistreatment of fat people, but they may still insist that a certain amount of weight is simply unhealthy. However, there are health care professionals who insist certain weight and health correlations do not have the strict cause and effect relationship we are told to believe. What?s more, there is little clarity about the definition of ?fat.?? Both professionals and laypeople rarely provide a clear definition of a healthy weight and the Body Mass Index used to determine who is and who is not fat has been questioned, if not completely debunked, by medical professionals.
In Health at Every Size: The Surprising Truth About Your Weight, nutritionist and physiologist Linda Bacon concludes that there is no real proof that losing weight automatically prolongs life. She writes ?While it is clear that research indicates a short-term improvement in health risk factors with weight loss, no randomized clinical studies have observed the long-term effects of weight loss.? Bacon even finds fallacious cause and effect relationships between weight and conditions like type-2 diabetes. (High levels of insulin may be a cause of weight gain, not its effect.) Bacon concludes that a Health at Every Size (HAES) approach is best, citing research that classifies fat people as fit based on performance in standard fitness tests. In collaboration with The Association of Size Diversity and Health, Bacon has created a HAES fact sheet, available online at https://www.sizediversityandhealth.org/content.asp?id=161.
The hot topic at the moment among ?fat activists,? as it is in the ?Keep Moving? article, is the issue of childhood obesity. The First Lady?s ?Let?s Move? campaign, along with the fact that children are now featured on the television show The Biggest Loser, has put fat children in the spotlight. I see no definite stigmatization from Ursinus Magazine?s authors and contributors. However, I still think it imperative for us all to be careful about how we word our preferment of childhood health. The article features children of all sizes and encourages fitness for all. This is good. However, the focus on childhood obesity, seen in the article?s full title as well as the cover of the magazine, suggests that only the kids deemed overweight are the problem, while kids of a ?healthy weight? need not worry so much. From a HAES point of view, fitness, itself, is the goal. Losing weight is a possible byproduct of this, but not a definite marker. In fact, a child who isn?t considered fat can still be out of shape due to an unhealthy lifestyle. As activist Marilyn Wann says in the preface to The Fat Studies Reader, ?The only thing that anyone can diagnose, with any certainty, by looking at a fat person, is their own level of stereotype and prejudice toward fat people.?
Let me reiterate that my main purpose is to inform people that alternative approaches to what is called ?the obesity epidemic? exist and are thriving. I am no scientist or medical professional. My goal is to see that all sides of this issue are voiced. Please look into Fat Studies, fat activism and HAES on your own and come to your own conclusions.

Job seekers often forget that employers are highly likely these days to Google potential job candidates to see what else they might learn about a potential hire. I?ve written before that what they find online, will either help or hurt your chances of receiving an offer.? I?ve written about being careful of what you post so that careless, crass, or unprofessional Google search results don?t throw you out of consideration.
Most times, you will not know why interest in your background stalled, the employer simply doesn?t move forward. They won?t tell you it?s because of something they found online. Carefully curating an online presence that enhances your attractiveness as a new employee can help.
How can you do that?
Here are a few ideas and suggestions?
Comment on industry blogs and articles. Writing professional, thoughtful, and value-added comments on industry or field related blog posts or online articles can add stature to your career. It shows that you care about your industry, that you?re knowledgeable, and that you contribute to the discussion. Those comments are also very likely to come up in a Google search as well!
Maximize your LinkedIn profile. One of the most likely search results for anyone, is their LinkedIn profile. It often comes up as one of the first few items. Creating a complete and compelling profile is one of the best ways to create a positive impression for an employer. There is a lot of information available on this site and many others about how to make the most of the impression you create.
Create a professional Twitter stream. Twitter can be a powerful tool to create a professional presence online. It can also damage a reputation if used carelessly. Rather than tweeting where you got your last cup of coffee or ranting about politics or celebrities? use it to share articles you like about your field or industry. Discuss related business trends and Re-Tweet other related news or pieces of information that add value for your career.
Submit articles to industry or trade publications. Many trade journals are always looking for good relevant content for their websites or other online publications. Writing compelling pieces related to their focus will often give you opportunities to have them post the piece online. It never hurts to ask! Offering to write a piece for other blogs often works as well.
Start a blog. Creating a blog relevant to your field can be a very effective way to build a professional presence online. Writing about topics relevant to your career shows that you are ?plugged in?, that you care about your field, and can communicate effectively. Blogs often become very visible on Google searches as well.
Anything you add online ought to be well written, free of foul language, free of bitterness or harsh criticisms, and free of personal attacks. However, by persistently seeking opportunities and adding to relevant online discussions can enhance your professional image when a potential employers searches your name on Google.
Be deliberate about your online activity and you may find it helps your job search!

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama's broad effort to reduce gun violence will include proposed bans on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips as well as more than a dozen executive orders aimed at circumventing congressional opposition to stricter gun control.
Obama was to announce the measures Wednesday at a White House event that will bring together law enforcement officials, lawmakers and children who wrote the president about gun violence following last month's shooting of 20 young students and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.
The broad package Obama will unveil will also include efforts to stop bullying and boost availability of mental health services.
But Congress would have to approve the bans on assault weapons and ammunition magazines holding more than 10 bullets, along with a requirement for universal background checks on gun buyers. Some gun control advocates worry that opposition from Republicans and conservative Democrats, as well as the National Rifle Association, will be too great to overcome.
"We're not going to get an outright ban," Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., said of limits on assault weapons. Still, McCarthy, a leading voice in Congress in favor of gun control, said she would keep pushing for a ban and hoped Obama would as well.
White House officials, seeking to avoid setting up the president for failure, have emphasized that no single measure ? even an assault weapons ban ? would solve a scourge of gun violence across the country. But without such a ban or other sweeping, congressionally-approved measures, it's unclear whether executive actions alone could make any noticeable difference.
"It is a simple fact that there are limits to what can be done within existing law," White House spokesman Jay Carney said Tuesday. "Congress has to act on the kinds of measures we've already mentioned because the power to do that is reserved by Congress."
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday signed into law the toughest gun control law in the nation, and the first since the Connecticut school shootings. The law includes a tougher assault-weapons ban and provisions to try to keep guns out of the hands of mentally ill people who make threats.
According to a lobbyist briefed Tuesday, Obama will present a three-part plan focused on gun violence, education and mental health. He'll call for:
? A focus on universal background checks. Right now some 40 percent of gun sales take place without background checks, including by private sellers at gun shows or over the Internet, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
? A ban on assault weapons and limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds or fewer.
? A federal statute to stop "straw man" purchases of guns and crack down on trafficking rings.
? More anti-bullying efforts; more training for teachers, counselors and principals; and funding for schools for more counselors and resource officers.
Obama also will order federal agencies to conduct more research on gun use and crimes, the lobbyist said, something Republican congressional majorities have limited through language in budget bills.
On mental health, Obama will focus on more availability of mental health services, training more school counselors and mental health professionals, and mental health first aid training for first responders, according to the lobbyist, who was not authorized to discuss the plan publicly before the president's announcement and requested anonymity.
The president's framework is based on recommendations from Vice President Joe Biden, who led a wide-ranging task force on gun violence. The vice president's proposals included 19 steps that could be achieved through executive action.
Obama also may order the Justice Department to crack down on people who lie on gun-sale background checks; only a tiny number are now prosecuted. Such a step has support from the National Rifle Association, which has consistently argued that existing laws must be enforced before new ones are considered.
And Obama may give schools flexibility to use grant money to improve safety.
Gun control proponent Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Va., who met with Biden on Monday, said the president is also likely to take executive action to ensure better state reporting of mental health and other records that go into the federal background check database. But he, too, acknowledged there were clear limits to what Obama can do without Congress' say-so.
"You can't change the law through executive order," Scott said.
White House officials signaled that Obama would seek to rally public support for the measures he puts forward, perhaps holding events around the country or relying on Organizing for America, his still-operational presidential campaign.
Still, it's unclear how much political capital Obama will exert in pressing for congressional action.
The White House and Congress will soon be consumed by three looming fiscal deadlines. And the president has also pledged to tackle comprehensive immigration reform early this year, another effort that will require Republicans' support and one in which Obama may be more likely to get their backing.
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has warned the White House that it will be at least three months before the Senate considers gun legislation. And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has said immigration, not gun control, is at the top of his priority list after the fiscal fights.
House Republican leaders are expected to wait for any action by the Senate before deciding how ? or whether ? to proceed with any gun measure.

Have you ever noticed how finding freelance technology writers is a lot like understanding that black monolith that floats through the storyline in Stanley Kubrick?s science fiction masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey? It?s difficult, but not impossible; after the second or third viewing of 2001, you might conclude the black monolith is the catalyst for evolution or mankind?s fear of the unknown, and after you tap into a couple of content writing services, chances are you?ll find that elusive tech writer, too.
The question, however, is why is it so difficult to find technology writers. Most everyone loves modern gadgets and devices, and writers are no exception, especially if they?re making a living writing web content. However, despite ubiquitous iPhones, tablets, and gaming systems, the nuts and bolts of how these gadgets work is something else entirely. From social media and cloud computing to software and coding, you might think that a writer who spends his or her days plugged into The Mainframe would know how every platform and level of that mainframe operates, but this is not the case at all. So how do you teleport a technology writer to work on your project?
Tech Speak and Mind Bending Jargon
Many writers shy away from picking up technology articles because of the mind bending jargon. Tech speak creates a lack of confidence in many writers, and this lack of confidence makes it easy for writers to boycott working on all technology articles. There are numerous writers out there who are competent and knowledgeable about technology, but they lack the confidence to take the job. In other words, unless you?re expecting the haute couture of tech articles (and maybe you want a blog that?s akin to a Wired or 21st Century cover story) take the extraneous jargon out of the instructions and replace it with layman?s terms; if not, you run the risk of having your order languish in the queue for an eternity. When you speak tech speak to a writer, you may as well be speaking in tongues.
There?s a Starman Waiting in the Clouds
Of course, there?s another reason many writers avoid technology articles. They can be dry, tedious, and repetitive to write, and when you couple that with spools of hi-tech and confusing terminology, many writers would rather watch paint dry that tackle a tech assignment. Instead of taking a nuts and bolts, workmanlike approach to your technology order, why not post the order with more emphasis on creativity and flair? Writers might be more willing to pick up the assignment, and readers, depending on the audience, might be more enthusiastic to read something like the following:
