NATO soldier, civilian, killed in Afghan 'insider' attack

KABUL (Reuters) - A member of NATO's Afghan force and a civilian contractor have been killed in the latest so-called insider attack by a member of the Afghan security forces, the NATO force said on Sunday.

The attack in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday came after the United States said joint operations with Afghan forces were returning to normal.

Joint operations were halted two weeks ago after a surge of attacks by Afghan allies. At least 52 members of the NATO force have been killed this year in so-called green-on-blue attacks.

It was too early to say what impact the latest incident would have on plans to restore joint-operations with Afghan forces to normal, a spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force said.

McCain: Don't expect surprises in upcoming debate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Sen. John McCain says not to expect any surprises in this week's first presidential debate because the televised confrontations nowadays are so heavily scripted.

McCain was President Barack Obama's challenger in 2008. He says if he were running against Obama again, he could easily guess ? and prepare for ? the first half dozen questions because they are usually so obvious.

McCain says he still thinks debates are good for the country and the elections, and he predicted that Wednesday's debate between Obama and Republican Mitt Romney will attract the largest number of viewers in history. But, he says, if Americans are expecting to catch any revealing moments, they might be disappointed because "frankly the candidates are too well prepared."

McCain spoke on CNN's "State of the Union."

Pets Of The Week: Smiles Galore ? CBS Detroit

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) Think dogs and cats don?t express how they really feel? Think again.

Because a glimpse of our pets of the week shows not only do their wag their tails when they want to charm ? they also smile.

Take, for instance, Little Red, an 8-year-old Chihuahua who shows his teeth with a big, bright smile.?He?s a lapdog who enjoys being petted. Then there?s Meka, a sweet little girl who loves attention and can?t wait to say hello.

They?re both smiling in their pictures this week ? but there?s one thing that would make them smile even bigger: A forever home!

See our pets of the week gallery HERE.

Indiana Tax Reporter: Glaze Tool and Engineering Seeks ...

From the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel:

A proposed $185,000 investment would create three jobs at a New Haven tool and die shop.

Glaze Tool and Engineering, 1610 Summit St., currently employs 23 people with average salaries of about $51,750. But the new manufacturing equipment would allow the 38-year-old company to add three more workers: two machinists earning about $35,000 annually and a tool and die employee paid about $65,000, according to a tax abatement application filed with the Allen County Department of Planning Services.

Abatements temporarily reduce the taxes paid on new buildings and equipment. If County Council approves the request next month, the company's taxes would be lowered $7,000 over five years.

Glaze produces products for the automotive, food, medical, heavy equipment and other industries, and also designs and builds special machines. It had about $2.5 million in sales last year.

The new equipment is expected to be installed by November, with the new employees in place by next June.

How We Know That Humans Are Getting Smarter [Excerpt]

In this excerpt from his new book, James R. Flynn explains how he came to understand how our minds have gained in cognitive skills over the 20th century

The phenomenon of IQ gains has created unnecessary controversy because of conceptual confusion. Imagine an archaeologist from the distant future who excavates our civilization and finds a record of performances over time on measures of marksmanship. The test is always the same, that is, how many bullets you can put in a target 100 meters away in a minute. Records from 1865 (the U.S. Civil War) show the best score to be five bullets in the target, records from 1898 (Spanish-American War) show 10, and records from 1918 (World War I) show 50.

A group of "marksmanship-metricians" looks at these data. They find it worthless for measuring marksmanship. They make two points. First, they distinguish between the measure and the trait being measured. The mere fact that performance on the test has risen in terms of "items correct" does not mean that marksmanship ability has increased. True, the test is unaltered but all we know is that the test has gotten easier. Many things might account for that. Second, they stress that we have only relative and no absolute scales of measurement. We can rank soldiers against one another at each of the three times. But we have no measure that would bridge the transition from one shooting instrument to another. How could you rank the best shot with a sling against the best shot with a bow and arrow? At this point, the marksmanship-metrician either gives up or looks for something that would allow him to do his job. Perhaps some new data that would afford an absolute measure of marksmanship over time such as eye tests or a measure of steady hands.

However, a group of military historians are also present and it is at this point they get excited. They want to know why the test got easier, irrespective of whether the answer aids or undermines the measurement of marksmanship over time. They ask the archaeologists to look further. Luckily, they discover battlefields specific to each time. The 1865 battlefields disclose the presence of primitive rifles, the 1898 ones repeating rifles, and the 1918 ones machine guns. Now we know why it was easier to get more bullets into the target over time and we can confirm that this was no measure of enhanced marksmanship. But it is of enormous historical and social significance. Battle casualties, the industries needed to arm the troops, and so forth altered dramatically.

Confusion about the two roles has been dispelled. If the battlefields had been the artifacts first discovered, there would have been no confusion because no one uses battlefields as instruments for measuring marksmanship. It was the fact that the first artifacts were also instruments of measurement that put historians and metricians at cross-purposes. Now they see that different concepts dominate their two spheres: social evolution in weaponry?whose significance is that we have become much better at solving the problem of how to kill people quickly; marksmanship?whose significance is which people have the ability to kill more skillfully than other people can.

The historian has done nothing to undermine what the metrician does. At any given time, measuring marksmanship may be the most important thing you can do to predict the life histories of individuals. Imagine a society dominated by dueling. It may be that the lives of those who are poor shots are likely to be too brief to waste time sending them to university, or hire them, or marry them. If a particular group or nation lacks the skill, it may be at the mercy of the better skilled. Nonetheless, this is no reason to ignore everything else in writing military history.

Nokia Lumia 920 handson the dualcore, HD Windows Phone 8 flagship to take on the beasts

Nokia's started its world tour of local announcements in Australia, letting slip that the Lumia 920 is coming to Telstra's LTE network down under. Those with an eye on the cheaper Lumia 820 are in luck too, as it's going to be carried by both Vodafone and Optus Business. The Finnish phone maker added that a number of leading retailers would be selling both handsets, but declined to go into specifics there. Pricing and availability will be announced toward the end of October, giving us hope that everything's on schedule for a strong pre-Christmas launch.

Not An Origin Story

This is directly transcribed from a daydream I had. The emotion was so real, that's why it feels very stream of conscious at times. Very proud of how this turned out.

NOT AN ORIGIN STORY

?You?re not interested in who I was before I got the powers. You?re interested in who I was before I became a hero.?

Forty minutes east of Trennorville there is a golden field of wheat.

A young woman in dirt-stained jeans and a baggy gray sweatshirt stands in the center of this field with her arms stretched wide. She has a round, shiny face with no makeup. Her eyes are closed.

She spreads her fingers, shifting them minutely. A light blue sphere held together by flickering veins of force begins to envelop her. Dark, wild, unruly hair stands on end - not by static, but a levitative force. Her feet leave the ground. The sphere moves with her.

Her eyes fly open. The sphere dissipates. She thuds back to the ground. She stands frozen, staring ahead, then down at the earth. Her breaths are shallow.

It takes her many tries, but hours later she hovers a few feet off the ground, the toes of white sneakers brushing the heads of wheat. Her face glows with exhilaration. The massive sphere around her is gone. Instead, each hand is surrounded by the blueish glow, in an orb the size of a fishbowl.

Some spark of clarity sends her crashing back to earth. She yells. She lands flat on her back.

Staring up at the sky, she gives a yell of frustration, then slams both fists into the earth.

The reaction is immediate. Spoil sputters, and her arms thud from recoil. Two mini-craters are left in the ground from her blows.

She scrambles to her feet at once. She locks eyes on a patch of earth, and curls a fist. There is a pregnant pause as she stands motionless, but then she lashes out in a purposeful jab.

The force knifes the earth, spraying dirt. She winces, but does not miss a beat. Wham. Wham-wham. Two more blows in quick succession, aiming for taller wheat.

The wheat bows.

Her eyes narrow. She turns her fist into a flat palm, and lunges forward, yelling. She whips her arm horizontally, and severs every wheat stalk in front of her that dared to stand tall.

And now the story can begin.

____

Trennorville?s south side was no place to wander once the traffic lights start flashing red.

He had been following her since she got off the subway. Every time she crossed the street, he did the same, gaining on her, block-by-block.

It drove her mad. She could hear him breathing, hear his footsteps. That?s how close he was.

She stops and turns. He is a shadowy figure with his hands in his pockets. He slows, but still advances on her steadily.

?Leave me alone,? she whimpers, holding out a palm, fingers curled.

He keeps at her, steps quickening now. She stumbles backward. Panic seizes her, and she strikes out like she struck at the wheat.

He goes flying backward with a yell of shock. He lands at an angle, but on his back, on the edge of an open dumpster bin. Something cracks, and he flops oddly to the ground.

Terror fills her. She staggers toward him, examines him. Blood trickles from his mouth. His eyes are open. She grabs a handful of his jacket, shakes him. He does not move.

A wail starts in her throat, but a flash of light cuts it off. A police cruiser rounds the corner; she is caught in its headlights. The siren chirps. She backs up more, turns, and runs.

As she gathers speed, the siren begins wailing in earnest. She runs faster, arms and legs churning. She races around the corner, a row of apartment buildings behind tall green fences.

Still she runs. She stares at the fences, remembering how she levitated in the field. They seem impossibly high, that field seems impossibly far away.

The cruiser gains ground on her, and she can see her own shadow spread in front of her, from all the lights. The officer shouts something. She can feel the heat of the engine.

Blinded by panic once more, she thrusts down at the ground with a spike of force, and pops herself into the air, very high. She clears the fence and its pointed ends but lands hard, on her shoulder, like a pole-less pole-vaulter.

She scrambles up and staggers across the courtyard, clutching her shoulder, towards the apartment building. The officer leaves his car and chases her, opening the gate with ease. She corners herself in a walled alley. Her back is against the brick. Both her hands are out. The energy sparks and flickers in her fingertips; her emotions surge. He approaches her, barking orders. Gun out, flashlight blinding her, demanding she stand down, lie down.

She makes no sense as she cries: ?Please, please, please, don?t, I don?t want to, don?t make me, no, no, no,? and as she yells, he yells. He takes a step closer. She wails. She has nowhere to go. Screams.

A gunshot. Her power explodes to life in a pure strong blue, the strongest it?s ever been. The flare punishes the bullet and its sender, shattering windows. When the blue subsides, there are car alarms, muffled yelling, radio squawks, and a still body thirty feet away.

She squats, crying, fingers curled in her hair, refusing to budge an inch to check on the officer, remembering only the dead man?s expression from earlier, by the dumpster.

But she looks up. Walls, sheer brick walls. She imagines again the safety of the field. She imagines levitating herself, but the fear of falling stabs her clean through.

She hears more sirens.

With nothing else to do, she rises to her feet. She is trembling, but centers her feet, directs her palms towards the ground and lifts herself slowly, ever so slowly. The flickering blue returns.

She tilts her head back and looks up at the sky, focusing on the stars, ignoring the brick even as it begins to drift downward. She levitates. She grabs the roof rail, clambers her way up.

She is on top of the building, now, and walks to its opposite edge. The route is not direct. There is uneven footing. Wind turbines churn. Gables here and there. Trennorville?s skyline is afire in front of her, muted orange in a dull sky.

She slides down into a seated position, hidden from sight - safe, for now. She draws her knees to her chest and sobs, wiping her nose, wiping her eyes on sweatshirt sleeves. Her shoulder, head, and heart ache.

Minutes pass, and she stops crying. She creates tiny, marble-sized force orbs and flicks them away.

The sirens are still approaching. Again, she gathers herself and stands. Nowhere to go but across. She puts one foot onto the ledge and peers over. A lower-story gable separates her from the next building; she could not walk, as the roof is angled.

She licks her lips and creates a shield below her, and tests her weight. It holds. She stands on it completely. There is nothing underneath her white sneakers but the energy.

She moves the force field with herself on it across the gap. She keeps her eyes focused on the other end.

She gets one foot onto the opposite side, home free, but the shield breaks as she leans her weight back.

She falls.

Reflex causes her to break her fall with a field, deflecting her into some bushes. She is stunned but not hurt, tangled.

She limps off, walking back the same way she had run earlier. Police cruisers whizz by to investigate the explosion around the corner - they pay her no mind.

She crosses the street early and refuses to look at the body by the dumpster.

She walks for a long time, mind churning, arms wrapped tightly around herself, returning to Trennorville?s downtown area.

She walks by a convenience store. It is jarringly bright inside. She notices a stand of superhero comics by the window. Someone exits, brushing past her. She stops walking, turns, pushes the door in, enters.

The bell dings.

The man behind the counter is Indian. She walks up, and speaks in a monotone.

?Can I use your bathroom??

?You have to buy something first,? he replies.

She casts about, snatches up a 5-Hour Energy from the rack, and sets it on the counter. She fishes out some crumpled bills and toss them on the counter.

The man takes her money, runs it through the register. He gives her a curious look. ?You lost??

She thrusts out a hand for the key, and her change. She shoves everything into her pockets, and heads to the bathroom.

The bathroom is equally bright. She relieves herself. She hunches over, curling her fingers, snaring them in her hair, exhausted, overwhelmed. She gets up and approaches the sink.

She stares at herself, vacantly. Chapped lips. Flat, greasy face. Weary eyes. Thick, poofy hair. The horrors of the night echo in her mind. The sirens, the screams, the sick feeling of terror.

As she washes her hands, the hair tie around her wrist catches her eye.

She removes it, and ties her hair back into a loose ponytail, just to get it out of her face. Dissatisfied, she does it again, this time pulling it tight, painfully tight, taming the mess, wrestling control over it.

She stares at her reflection again. Her breaths are shallow. She huffs. She pushes back the sleeves of her sweatshirt. She huffs again.

She clenches her fist, and gives a gameface snarl.

Ripping the plastic off the bottle, she downs the 5-Hour Energy and slams it in the sink.

She erupts from the bathroom, striding with purpose. Her eyes glitter. She tosses the key back over the country and hits the door hard on her way out.

Her stride turns into a jog.

Steps later, the jog turns into a sprint.

Harvest Moon by Hand: Favorite Pets

I have been happy to have had a variety of pets as an adult - dogs, cats, sheep, chickens, turkeys, and horses.?Out of all the pets I felt the greatest connection to, though, it had to be Casey.?

Pictures of Casey with Sophia, Olivia, and Montague.

(Collage created on February 14, 2008.)

Casey was ?adopted from a humane society, and was one of several puppies in a litter.?When I went to look at them, she came right to me. I liked the distinctive white mark on her chest. It stood out against her black fur.

For the first few months of her life, she lived in Minneapolis. Then, she became a farm dog. As livestock was added to the farm, she was equally intrigued and amused by the animals - sheep, chickens, turkeys, and horses.

She was an incredibly gentle dog and none of the poultry, lambs, sheep, or horses felt threatened by her. In fact, mother sheep would allow Casey to get close to their newborn lambs.?

When I was offering a children's camp, many of the children who lived in the inner-city were frightened of dogs, particularly large dogs. At 60+ pounds, Casey probably looked very scary to them.

Yet, the children who were fearful of her at the beginning of the camp week, were hugging her when the camp program ended at the end of the week. Truly, she had changed their attitudes and helped them overcome their fear of dogs in only a few days.

Casey died when she was 12 years old from complications of a twisted stomach. Prior to her death, she began having seizures which was frightening to watch. The only thing I could do was comfort her and be there for her when she came out of the seizures.

That is such a short period of her life...and, by thinking about it, I am not remembering the happier times. So, I think about how she and Sydne (and later Montague) would play and "pretend fight" in the backyard. These dogs - who did not know one another - became close companions. They enjoyed going on walks, exploring the backyard, discovering interesting scents that wildlife left on the nature trail, swimming in the river, and sleeping on the bed next to me.

The current dogs here are Montague and Gretel. They are, likewise, a great team. When Montague was grieving the loss of Casey and wouldn't leave the deck...or would look out the window waiting for her...it was clear he needed someone else.

Montague in the pasture.

He and Casey would run in the pasture together.

They would enjoy finding tracks of rabbits and deer; or?

discovering pheasants who would fly out from the tall grass.

(Taken on September 29, 2007.)

Gretel was adopted from a humane society, and became Montague's life line. He was able to move through his grief thanks to Gretel.?

It has been fun to raise a dog from the puppy stage again. (Sydne and Casey were both adopted as puppies while Montague was adopted as a 1 1/2 year old adult dog.) The humane society thought perhaps Gretel was a German Shepherd-Basset Hound mix. As she has grown up, it looks like she is more of a German Shepherd-Coonhound mix.

Gretel listening.?

One of her favorite toys when she was a puppy is nearby.

(Taken on March 28, 2008.)

She has a goofy personality and is very vocal. I've never heard a dog "talk" as much as Gretel does. She also will rub her head on my arms, legs, back, side...wherever she can wedge herself next me. She does this to others in the family as well...not just me. It's as if she wants us to know we're part of her pack and she's part of ours.

In addition to the dogs, I've had six cats since 1990. I also had one shortly after I graduated from college. I didn't have that cat for long due to behavior issues it had.

The six cats I've had came at different times. There have never been more than five cats at one time in the house. Honestly, that's plenty of cats.

That being said, seeing the personalities of each cat develop from being a kitten to cat has been fun. There are cats who enjoy playing and resting next to one another while others prefer to be rest and spend the majority of their day alone.

Meenie, Eenie, and Lucy sitting together.

(Taken on November 17, 2010.)

Each cat has something distinctive about her/him. Maggie, the solitary cat, prefers to rest quietly either on top of the DirecTV box or heating vent in the floor (both nice warm spots). She sits next to me while I eat and will gently put out her claws and tap me if she sees some food of interest. The only other cat that has done that was Boo (who was adopted in Charlotte, North Carolina).

Maggie playing with different items on the nature table.

(Taken on November 22, 2007.)

Shadow wandered onto the farm (just like Lucy and Maggie). However, he spent the majority of the days sitting on the fallen log in the pasture or in the hobby shed. We would put out food for him so he had something to eat, and would feel more comfortable around us.

As the weather became much colder in the winter, he trusted us enough by that time to allow us to bring him indoors.?After the weather warmed, he wanted to go back outside.

Shadow outdoors in the pasture.

(Taken on?November 1, 2008.)

He stayed outdoors until the following fall, and then wanted to come indoors. He has been an indoor cat since that time. Out of all the cats, Shadow has the most mellow and easy-going personality. He gets along with all the cats, especially Eenie and Lucy who enjoy running around the house together and playing.

In July 2009, we adopted a pony and miniature horse from the Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation. Both the pony and horse came from neglect situations, and were quite underweight. Both had not been in pastures - they were in dry lots with limited space to move.

Needless to say, it was a long process to transition their stomachs and bodies from dry alfalfa to pasture grass. To see them at first be confined to the barn and a small area behind the barn - to gradually spending time in the pasture - to seeing them gallop together throughout the pasture has been a joy.

Bailey walking in the pasture through the snow.

She's on the east side of the pond.

(taken on March 27, 2011.)

What makes Bailey and Hoss' relationship special is that we found out (after they were adopted) that Bailey is blind in her right eye. Her left eye has a pigmentation and other vision issue that potentially could render her completely blind.?

Hoss, despite being only about a third of her size and weight, watches out for his companion. He stays next to her when they go out in the pasture together. When he has to stay out of the pasture (so he doesn't over-consume grass and get sick), he keeps a watchful eye on Bailey. When he can't see her, he will call to her to make sure she's okay.?

Hoss in the wooden area in the pasture in the spring.

(Taken on March 29, 2012.)

The minute he is let out in the pasture, he runs at full speed to her, and eats right next to her. They are inseparable.

The latest addition to the home is Phoenix Star, a hedgehog who was adopted on June 29th. It has been interesting to watch him during the last few months move from the baby-hedgehog stage to the adult-stage as he lost his baby quills and grew permanent ones in. Imagine teething...except all over your body. That's what happened to Phoenix.

Phoenix at about 8 weeks old.

(Taken on June 30, 2012.)

Through adoption, I have seen cats, dogs, horses, livestock, and a hedgehog all live peacefully together. Seeing them grow up and play together is a daily joy for me.

I can't imagine just having one cat...one dog...or one horse. Seeing how important companionship is to the pets here only makes me that much happier that they are part of a pet-filled home, and that each one gets to experience the love, care, and playfulness that another animal can bring to her/his life.

Obama urges UN to confront roots of Muslim rage

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? President Barack Obama told world leaders Tuesday that attacks on U.S. citizens in Libya "were attacks on America," and he called on them to join in confronting the root causes of the rage across the Muslim world.

"I do believe that it is the obligation of all leaders, in all countries, to speak out forcefully against violence and extremism," Obama said in a speech to the annual gathering of the United Nations General Assembly.

Obama also condemned the anti-Muslim video that helped spark the recent attacks, calling it "cruel and disgusting." But he strongly defended the U.S. Constitution's protection of the freedom of expression, "even views that we profoundly disagree with."

With U.S. campaign politics shadowing every word, Obama also warned that time to peacefully curb the Iranian nuclear crisis is running out.

He said there is "still time and space" to resolve the issue through diplomacy. But that time is not unlimited."

"Make no mistake: A nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained. It would threaten the elimination of Israel, the security of Gulf nations and the unraveling of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty," he said.

The foreign minister of Indonesia, the nation with world's largest Muslim population, said Obama's speech was a "clarion call" for all nations to shun intolerance and he expected Muslim nations to react positively. .

"There will be a lot of sympathy. It is an issue that galvanizes all of us," Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa told The Associated Press. But he added that freedom of expression should be exercised with consideration to morality and public order.

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has accused Obama of not being tough enough on Iran and of turning his back on Israel and other allies in the Middle East. Romney also has said he doesn't have much faith in peace prospects between Israelis and Palestinians.

Obama told the U.N.: "Among Israelis and Palestinians, the future must not belong to those who turn their backs on the prospect of peace."

Romney in separate remarks to a global conference sponsored by former President Bill Clinton, said the attack at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that took the life of the U.S. ambassador and three other U.S. citizens was an act of terrorism.

Obama mentioned the slain U.S. ambassador, Christopher Stevens, several times in his address.

"Today, we must declare that our future will be determined by people like Chris Stevens and not by his killers. Today, we must declare that this violence and intolerance has no place among our United nations," he said.

Unlike Romney, Obama has not specifically called the attacks in Libya and other U.S. missions terrorism.

Obama said that "at a time when anyone with a cellphone can spread offensive views around the world with the click of a button," the notion that governments can control the flow of information is obsolete.

"There is no speech that justifies mindless violence," such as the attack that left the four Americans dead in Libya, Obama said.

"The strongest weapon against hateful speech is not repression, it is more speech ? the voices of tolerance that rally against bigotry and blasphemy and lift up the values of understanding and mutual respect."

Obama said that the United States "will be relentless in tracking down the killers and bringing them to justice." And he said he appreciated "that in recent days, the leaders of other countries in the region ? including Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen ? have taken steps to secure our diplomatic facilities and called for calm. So have religious authorities around the globe."

The president said there was no way the United States would have just banned the offensive video that helped trigger the attacks, as some leaders in the Muslim world have advocated.

"Like me, the majority of Americans are Christian, and yet we do not ban blasphemy against our most sacred beliefs," Obama said.

"Moreover, as president of our country and commander in chief of our military, I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day, and I will always defend their right to do so," he said, drawing laughter from his audience.

Running through Obama's speech was an overall theme that leaders of the Muslim world should also stand up for freer speech and oppose those who vent their anger with violence.

"There are no words that excuse the killing of innocents. There is no video that justifies an attack on an embassy. There is no slander that provides an excuse for people to burn a restaurant in Lebanon or destroy a school in Tunis or cause death and destruction in Pakistan," Obama said.

"More broadly, the events of the last two weeks speak to the need for all of us to address honestly the tensions between the West and an Arab world moving to democracy," he said.

But, he added, "Just as we cannot solve every problem in the world, the United States has not, and will not, seek to dictate the outcome of democratic transitions abroad, and we do not expect other nations to agree with us on every issue."

"Nor do we assume that the violence of the past weeks, or the hateful speech by some individuals, represents the views of the overwhelming majority of Muslims ? any more than the views of the people who produced this video represent those of Americans."

Turning to the rising violence in Syria, Obama told the U.N. delegates, "The future must not belong to a dictator who massacres his people. If there is a cause that cries out for protest in the world today, it is a regime that tortures children and shoots rockets at apartment buildings. We must remain engaged to assure that what began with citizens demanding their rights does not end in a cycle of sectarian violence."

"Together, we must stand with those Syrians who believe in a different vision ? a Syria that is united and inclusive, where children don't need to fear their own government and all Syrians have a say in how they are governed? Sunnis and Alawites, Kurds and Christians."

Obama also noted some hopeful developments in the world in the nearly four years he's been in office.

"The war in Iraq is over, and our troops have come home. We have begun a transition in Afghanistan, and America and our allies will end our war on schedule in 2014," he said. "Al-Qaida has been weakened, and Osama bin Laden is no more. Nations have come together to lock down nuclear materials, and America and Russia are reducing our arsenals."

Summing up, Obama said, "true democracy ? real freedom ? is hard work."

Declaring it is time to leave "the call of violence and the politics of division behind," Obama said: "We cannot afford to get it wrong. We must seize this moment. And America stands ready to work with all who are willing to embrace a better future."

Electricity savings grow business marketing power

September electricity and natural gas pricing has continued to beat the utility SOS (Standard offer Service) pricing in most markets. Giving companies that pay directly for their utilities an opportunity to lower their energy costs and deploy those savings to other areas in their business. Recently a restaurant client reduced their cost of electricity by a penny per kilo Watt hour using Electric Advisors as the conduit, saving over $8,000.00 over the next 12 months. According to the owner, close to 50% of the money not being spent on energy is going to be used to beef up their social media outreach as part of a larger?campaign?to fill more seats more often. What would you business do with another $4,000.00 in marketing spend?

What Separates Paradise In-Home Care | PRLog

PRLog (Press Release) - Sep 23, 2012 -
Paradise In-Home Care and the Paradise Gardens Care Homes have some exciting things to offer in terms of the senior care they provide. Everyone knows that senior care is an essential component of senior healthcare, but not all senior care providers go above and beyond when it comes to comfort, care, and community. This is what sets the Paradise family of care providers apart from the others in this marketplace.

Based out of the San Francisco, California, area, Paradise now is offering even more services to their clients. If you are unsure of what you are looking for in senior care, this is a very good place to start. For prospective clients, Paradise offers a wide range of free services. You can get an initial consultation complimentary in order to determine exactly what type of care will be the most beneficial to you or your elderly loved one. This is an important thing to use since many people do not really know exactly what kind of help they need?they just know that caring for someone is getting to be overwhelming.

If you do determine that assisted living is the best decision, you are entitled to free tours of the either or both of the Paradise Gardens Care Homes. Finding the appropriate home is really important; when you find a home that is a good fit, you are more likely to stay happy and healthy. As you know, this is exactly what your retirement years should be like.

Paradise separates themselves with the background of their employees. All employees are fully trained and are not freelance workers. Rather, they are employees of Paradise In-Home Care or Paradise Gardens Care Homes. This ensures that employees will all be held fully accountable for the service that they will be providing.

In addition to this, all Paradise employees have undergone full background checks, including a look at criminal records. If you have ever considered going with a referral agency, they cannot usually make this same claim in regards to the caregivers that they send out. A recent study found that many referral agencies do not do any sort of background checks or training, but rather just make referrals based upon location and price. While this might save you money, it is a risk that is not worth taking. Most of these caregivers are competent, of course, but there is always a possibility that they are not. For yourself or your loved ones, you never want to gamble in this area. You want someone who is going to provide top care and be able to respond appropriately during times of emergency. The only way to guarantee this is to make sure that your caregiver is completely trained and checked out.

Paradise caregivers are fully insured and bonded. This is another feature that referral agencies do not always provide. Many require the independent caregiver to supply this level of protection on their own. No one wants something bad to happen, but having an employer providing this safety feature makes the care giving process a lot less stressful.
Furthermore, Paradise keeps their business within house. For example, they handle all of their own paperwork, payroll, and taxes. This streamlined approach to handling business has made Paradise a leader within the Bay Area when it comes to senior care.

If you?re looking for a caregiver or an assisted living facility for a loved one and decide that Paradise In-Home Care is for you, mention this press release and receive a discount on in home care when you sign up for at least three months of care. Paradise will customize their care giving for your elderly family member depending upon their needs. This is what separates an excellent caregiver from an adequate caregiver.

Dot Earth Blog: Around One Park, a Fight to Blunt the Great Elephant Slaughter

Nick Brandt is an extraordinary photographer, as you can see by exploring this haunting portrait of Igor, an elephant he encountered in Kenya?s Amboseli National Park in 2007. I learned of Brandt?s work through this interview with the excellent Safari Talk blog.

But Brandt is far more than an image maker. Igor was slaughtered by poachers in 2009, giving extra resonance to a photograph that already speaks of the magnificence of an ancient and wise mammal species. That killing and so many others ? driven by the explosive growth in demand for ivory in Asia ? led Brandt in 2010 to co-found Big Life Foundation, a nonprofit doing its small part ? by raising funds for anti-poaching patrols around the Amboseli ecosystem ? to conserve elephants and other targeted wildlife. Here?s a useful new map of the activities. Here?s Brandt?s moving description of what drove him to move beyond documenting the region?s living resources.

Now Big Life has produced a short film about the situation in and around Amboseli, a vast area that includes the Kenyan park but straddles the Tanzania-Kenya border and spreads south to Mount Kilimanjaro:

In an e-mail exchange, I pointed Brandt to a recent National Geographic cover story and a New York Times Op-Ed article by the anthropologist Louisa Lombard, both of which concluded that the continuing slaughter of elephants cannot be stemmed without cutting insatiable ivory demand. I asked, ?Do you feel you?re fighting a losing war??

Here?s Brandt?s reply:

The only way to blunt losses is to cut demand.* It?s unlikely that we would ever even have needed to start Big Life had it not been for the explosion in demand for ivory and other animal parts from China and the Far East.

Do I feel like we?re fighting a losing war?

At least here in the Amboseli ecosystem, currently, no I do not. The poaching here in 2010 before we established such a significant presence was way worse than what it is now. This is thanks to the 250 rangers we now have on the ground across the trans-border ecosystem. For example, an elephant was shot and killed last week, but due to informer information, we know who the killer is and our rangers are in pursuit of him.

However, we are lucky, in a manner of speaking, that so far, due to our geographic location, we have not been subjected to raiding gangs of heavily armed military rebel groups like being experienced through Cameroon, Chad, CAR, DRC, etc, etc.

With insufficient funding and lack of necessary anti-poaching infrastructure, an awful kind of Sophie/s Choice is having to be made ? entire herds, entire populations of elephant herds are just being lost fast, significantly because very finite resources are being used to save other populations elsewhere.

So until demand for ivory and other animal parts from China and the Far East is radically reduced, there are many many other areas, indeed most areas of Africa, where, yes, tragically, the war will be lost. And shockingly quickly.

Please read the 2011 Safari Talk interview for a lot more from Brandt on his wildlife photography and activism.

[3:30 p.m. | Updated * In the line marked by an asterisk above, I deleted the word "yes" at the beginning of the sentence after Brandt noted he was not saying yes to it being a losing battle.]

N.J. Gov. Christie, praised by Branstad, tells Iowa GOP Nov. 6 offers ?golden opportunity?

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who was urged by some Iowans to run for president last year, got a warm reception Thursday night at a fundraising dinner in Altoona where he gave a pep talk for Iowa Republican candidates and offered ringing support for Mitt Romney?s presidential bid.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie/Des Moines Register file photo

Christie, who is known for his blunt manner and an agenda favoring budget cuts and lower taxes,, received kind words from Gov. Terry Branstad, who called him ?my good friend? and ?someone who has the courage to tell it like it is.?

Christie, in turn, thanked Branstad for allowing him to be part of ?Team Iowa? and he promised to return to Iowa in October to campaign for Republican candidates. The Iowa GOP already controls the governor?s office and the Iowa House, and Christie told the audience ?if you turn the Senate over to Iowa Republicans, it is going to throw jet fuel on Iowa?s comeback.?

?This is a golden opportunity,? said Christie, who received a standing ovation after his keynote speech to a crowd of about 600 people at Prairie Meadows conference center. The event was sponsored by the Team Iowa PAC, which was raising campaign money for the GOP?s Iowa Senate candidates.

Christie spoke earlier Thursday at a fundraising luncheon in Sioux City on behalf of U.S. Rep. Steve King?s reelection campaign, although King had to miss the event because of commitments in Washington, D.C.

Christie said the presidential election offers a sharp contrast between Democrat Barack Obama and Romney. Democrats, he contended, ?believe that you belong to the government? and have put the country on a path of more taxes, more bureaucracy, and higher federal spending.

?Mitt Romney believes something totally different. His entire life is a testimony that government belongs to us, and that success is by integrity and ingenuity and work ethic,? Christie said.

He added, ?If you believe the government is answerable to you, the inexorable conclusion is that you have to vote for Mitt Romney to save this country.?

Christie, who gave the keynote address at the Republican Natiional Convention last month in Tampa, Fla., joked that he forced himself to sit on the couch at home and watch the Democratic National Convention, which he described as the ?circus in Charlotte.? He claimed Obama is ?looking for forgiveness for his failure? and he said he is convinced Romney will be in the White House in January if the Republican presidential candidate wins Iowa?s electoral votes on Nov. 6.

Despite Christie?s stated disinterest last year, a group of a half-dozen prominent Iowa businessman who were dissatisfied with the field of GOP presidential candidates traveled to New Jersey an effort to convince him to run. They spent about 2 ? hours urging him to enter the race, but Christie turned them down.

Christie?s trip to Iowa on Thursday could seed speculation about a potential future presidential run, but it mainly allows him to score a few points with Iowa Republicans, said Drake University political scientist Dennis Goldford, who is an expert on the Iowa caucuses. ?This gives him a way to keep his options open and it doesn?t particularly commit him to anything,? he said.

Iowa Democratic Party Chairwoman Sue Dvorsky issued a statement Thursday criticizing Christie, calling him a ?very poor steward of the New Jersey economy.? She noted that in August, the U.S. Labor Department announced New Jersey lost more jobs in July than any other state, giving it the nation?s fourth-highest unemployment rate. On Tuesday, Standard & Poor?s Rating Services lowered its outlook on the state?s debt from stable to negative.

But Christie told Iowans Thursday night that New Jersey ?was a wreck? when he took office in January 2010 and he must deal with a Democratic-led House and Senate. He spoke proudly of pushing for state budget cuts and less government despite warnings that ?New Jersey will float into the Atlantic Ocean.?

?We have not raised one tax, and we will not raise one tax on my watch,? Christie said. The result of his work has been that New Jersey children are getting a good education, hospitals are open, the poor are taken care of, and there is a positive business environment, he said.

Investing in gold more profitable than real estate: Assocham | Firstpost

Investments in gold have yielded higher returns compared to those in equity and real estate in India during the last three years, according to a study.

Those who invested in gold between September 2009 and September 2012, have received double the returns when it was their first choice for investment, a study released by industry body Assocham said.

Presently, price of gold is over Rs 32,000 per 10 grams against around Rs 15,000 per 10 grams about three years ago.

More precious than equity, real estate: Reuters

Hence, giving more than double the returns on investments, it said.

?Gold has really outdone other asset classes and it is likely to remain an attractive bet as long as uncertainty over the global economy stays? Assocham Secretary General D S Rawat said.

He added that gold is the safest bet for investments amid uncertainty in other investment avenues.

The prices of yellow metal saw a huge jump due to high prices of gold across the world and a weakening rupee.

The study said those who invested in property have also seen good returns. However, these are comparatively lower than returns from gold.

Investments in real estate have yielded almost double returns in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Gurgaon in the last three years, it said.

However, the study said the equity market has been the ?worst performer?, with investors witnessing erosion in wealth during the period under review.
